This indicator measures the percentage of households whose waste is collected and managed in controlled facilities, that is, whose main method of rubbish disposal is either a rubbish collection service or a publicly managed refuse area.

Definitions

Households whose waste is collected and managed in controlled facilities are defined as households whose main method of rubbish collection is either a rubbish collection service or a publicly managed refuse area. This excludes households whose main method of rubbish disposal is a compost heap; throwing rubbish in bushes or fields; dumping rubbish in ditches, rivers, or lakes; burning; or other methods.

Comments and limitations

The unit of analysis is the household rather than units of waste. This indicator concerns the main method of rubbish disposal of households; any additional methods used by the same household are not included. Frequency, regularity and proximity of collection points are also not considered. Additionally, reflecting the evolving best practice in poverty measurement, a number of important methodological changes were made for EICV7 (2023-2024). Global indicator description

The proportion of the population with access to basic MSW collection services is the proportion of the population who receive waste collection services that are either basic, improved or full, defined by the service ladder of MSW collection service. It considers aspects of frequency, regularity and proximity of the collection points.
