This table provides metadata for the actual indicator available from Rwanda statistics closest to the corresponding global SDG indicator. Please note that even when the global SDG indicator is fully available from Rwandan statistics, this table should be consulted for information on national methodology and other Rwandan-specific metadata information.

| Indicator description |
Due to the lack of data availability for the main indicator, "Proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture", this page provides proxies for some of the supplementary series described in the global metadata. The supplementary series "Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of use of agro-biodiversity supportive practices" is represented by the proxy series "Percentage of agricultural land area under agroforestry". The supplementary series "Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of management of fertilizers" is represented by the proxy series "Percentage of land in which organic fertilizer was applied" and "Percentage of land in which inorganic fertilizer was applied". The supplementary series "Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of farm output value per hectare" is represented by proxy series providing the average yield in metric tonnes per hectare of four major crops":" beans, cooking bananas, maize, and cassava. The supplementary series "Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of variation in water availability" is represented by the proxy series "Percentage of modern irrigated agricultural land". The supplementary series "Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of management of pesticides" is represented by the proxy series "Percentage of land in which pesticides were used". The supplementary series "Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of risk mitigation mechanisms" is represented by the proxy series "Percentage of agricultural land area under erosion control". The supplementary series "Proportion of agricultural land area that has achieved an acceptable or desirable level of soil degradation" is represented by the proxy series "Percentage of plots with moderate to severe erosion". |

| Definitions |
In all cases, agricultural season A is used as a reference season for consistency. Agricultural land refers to all land used for agriculture, including land under seasonal crops, permanent crops, permanent pasture, temporary fallow land, and temporary meadow and pasture. Plots refer to distinct agricultural areas and can be of varying size. |
| Calculations |
The formula (Total agricultural land with the relevant property / Total agricultural land) * 100 is used for most series in this indicator, with the exception of “Percentage of plots with moderate to severe erosion”, which uses the formula (Total plots with moderate erosion + Total plots with severe erosion) / Total plots * 100, and the average yield series, which are calcualated as (Total yield in metric tonnes / Land area in hectares). |
| Comments and limitations |
The methodology for calculating crop yield changed significantly in 2018; in the previous reports yield was calculated by production of crop in the plot over cultivated area, but in 2018 agricultural year there was a change in yield calculation whereby yield is calculated by using harvested area of that plot. This is the reason behind a significantly higher yield of perennial crops beginning in 2018; the figures are not directly comparable. In some cases, data are available for previous years in another form, such as disaggregated by farm scale. See linked data source for more information and methodological details. |
