|---|---|
| Indicator description |
An Agriculture Orientation Index (AOI) greater than 1 reflects a higher orientation towards the agriculture sector, which receives a higher share of government spending relative to its contribution to economic value-added. An AOI less than 1 reflects a lower orientation to agriculture, while an AOI equal to 1 reflects neutrality in a government’s orientation to the agriculture sector. The numerator and denominator are also provided here as separate series. |

| Definitions |
The agriculture orientation index for government expenditures is defined as the agriculture share of government expenditure, divided by the agriculture value added share of GDP. |
| Calculations |
First, the numerator and denominator are calculated separately. The agriculture share of government expenditure is calculated as - Budget allocated to the relevant sector / Total budget * 100. The agriculture value added share of GDP is calculated as - Agriculture value added / Total GDP * 100. Finally, the agriculture orientation index for government expenditures is calculated as - Agriculture share of government expenditure / Agriculture value added share of GDP. |
| Comments and limitations |
The agriculture orientation index itself was calculated specifically for this indicator based on public data. As the numerator and denominator come from different sources, there may be differences in methodology; please see the linked data source for more information. |
