| Definitions |
The numerator of this indicator is the number of women who use any modern method of contraception. Modern methods include female sterilization, male sterilization, pill, IUD, injectables, implants, male condom, female condom, standard days method, and lactational amenorrhea method (LAM). The denominator of this indicator is the total demand for family planning, which is the sum of met need and unmet need. Women using any method of contraception, including modern and traditional methods, are considered to have a met need for family planning. Unmet need for family planning is defined as occurring among fecund women who are not pregnant or postpartum amenorrheic, who wish to postpone their next birth by two or more years or to stop childbearing entirely, and who are not currently using a contraceptive method. Additionally, pregnant women are considered to have an unmet need for spacing or limiting if their pregnancy was mistimed or unwanted, respectively. Similarly, amenorrheic women are categorized as having an unmet need if their most recent birth was mistimed or unwanted. |
