This indicator measures the proportion of the population living within range of a mobile network, broken down by the type of technology (2G, 3G, or 4G).

Definitions

Proportion of population covered by a mobile network, broken down by technology, refers to the percentage of inhabitants living within range of a mobile-cellular signal, irrespective of whether or not they are mobile phone subscribers or users.
Calculations

Population living within range of each technology / Total population * 100
Other information

In some cases, figures are only available per provider and not in aggregate; this dashboard uses the figure for the provider with the highest coverage in each case, but this may be an underestimate of total coverage including other providers. Data is given for June in some years and December in others, depending on the source.
Comments and limitations

This measure only reflects the proportion of the population living within range of each type of mobile network. It does not account for other dimensions of access, such as ownership of a mobile device or affordability of network technology.

Proportion of population covered by a mobile network, broken down by technology, refers to the percentage of inhabitants living within range of a mobile-cellular signal, irrespective of whether or not they are mobile phone subscribers or users. This is calculated by dividing the number of inhabitants within range of a mobile-cellular signal by the total population and multiplying by 100.
